General Leopold Dieppe (Royal Emberstone Foreign Legion)

General Leopold Dieppe (b. ca. 1640s) is the legendary commander of the Royal Emberstone Foreign Legion, a pivotal figure in both the Industrial War (“WW1” analog) and the Five-Year-War (“WW2” analog) in Astenet. Originally a Felderian officer, Dieppe defected after the Saffronalia Massacre and became a hero of Emberstone, ultimately leading the Foreign Legion through the bloodiest battles of the Second War.

Early Life and Felderian Service

Dieppe began his career as an officer in the Felderian Army. He was known for his care for his men, placing their lives above blind obedience to suicidal orders. This approach frequently put him at odds with Felderia’s command structure, which treated soldiers as expendable.

The Saffronalia Massacre and Defection

During the Industrial War, a spontaneous Saffronalia truce occurred along the trenches between Felderian and Emberstonian forces. Both sides fraternized, exchanged gifts, and shared food in No Man’s Land. The truce was shattered when a junior Felderian officer opened fire on Emberstonian soldiers, triggering a massacre in which many Felderians were killed due to being unarmed and unprepared. Dieppe held no hate against Emberstone for this, understanding they reacted the way a soldier would and should react to a threat. He blamed high command for interfering in things they were out of the loop on and didn't understand.

Disgusted by Felderia’s leadership and unwilling to see more of his men sacrificed, Dieppe was ordered to go over the top in a suicidal push against Emberstone. Instead, he purged his company of loyalists and defected with those who wished to follow. He and his men were accepted by Lord High Protector Masdrin, who respected Dieppe’s actions and values.

Dieppe’s decision was driven entirely by Felderian incompetence and disregard for their own troops; he understood that, in the same situation, Emberstone would have suffered the same fate. The final order to sacrifice his men was the last straw—Dieppe knew their best chance for survival was with the enemy.

Founding of the Emberstone Foreign Legion

Dieppe’s defection led directly to the founding of the Emberstone Foreign Legion (EFL) in 1678, after the Industrial War. The EFL became a full branch of the Royal Emberstone Armed Forces (REAF), known for taking on the most dangerous and politically sensitive missions.

* Membership: Entirely foreign-born volunteers seeking redemption, refuge, or a clean slate. Emberstonians may join, but typically serve elsewhere in REAF. * Structure: Full REAF branch, with its own internal traditions and hierarchy. Dieppe’s original unit forms the revered First Cohort. * Path to Citizenship: Five years of honorable service grants full Emberstone citizenship and the right to sponsor a family member.

The Second War and Legendary Command

By the Second War, Dieppe had risen to command the entire EFL. Now a hardened, autonomous special forces branch, the Legion fielded its own coastal boats, a small air force, and participated in the most dangerous operations, including liberation of Brynn Bladeshard’s thrall camps.

* Command Style: Dieppe led from a custom STARAH (Stealth Tactical Armored Rotary Aircraft Hybrid), escorted by SHARAs. He maintained overwatch and direct radio command, but would “roll up in a tank” if necessary. * Reputation: The EFL, under Dieppe, earned a reputation for being “harder than a coffin nail,” always volunteering for high-risk missions and consistently delivering results.

Namesake and Major Battles

Dieppe’s name is drawn from two major WWII battles: the Dieppe Raid and the Battle of the Leopold Canal—both bloody, pivotal engagements for Canadian forces. In-universe, these allusions foreshadow his role in leading the Legion through the most costly and decisive battles of the Second War, with his name becoming synonymous with the EFL’s legendary resilience.

Legacy and Postwar Life

* Loyalty: Dieppe is fiercely loyal to Emberstone and King Masdrin, considering himself Emberstonian and never seeking to return to Felderia—even after Felderia’s reform under the Declan dynasty. * Hero Status: Celebrated as a hero in Emberstone, Dieppe is valued as a commander whose men are not expendable, whose advice is trusted, and whose judgment is respected at the highest levels. * Personal Command: As with other generals, Dieppe maintains a private, well-equipped bodyguard unit drawn from former Legionnaires, funded through bounties on captured materiel and personal wealth. * Military Reform: Dieppe’s actions directly contributed to the collapse of the Bladeshard dynasty in Felderia and the rise of the Declan regime, which instituted Emberstonian-style reforms, banned slavery, and reshaped the postwar world order.
