The Garyodos is a colossal aquatic creature known for its immense size, protective instincts, and emotionally-driven behavior. Resembling a cross between a sea dragon and a golden retriever, Garyodos are often misunderstood as dangerous monsters—when in truth, they are cautious, curious, and deeply loyal once a bond is formed.

Though often solitary, many Garyodos form mated pairs and carve out large territories in massive bodies of water—both saltwater and freshwater. Only one pair occupies a region at a time, as they are territorial only toward others of their kind.

===== Habitat and Range =====
Garyodos are found in oceans, vast inland lakes, and deepwater trench systems across the world. Despite their size, they often go unnoticed unless they choose to reveal themselves.

The most famous Garyodos pair lives near Mistwood Harbor and has become culturally integrated into Emberstone society. Another known individual, a bold black-and-blue female named Bonk, resides in Lake Blackwater in the Deep Dark. Bonk is known to occasionally "charge snack tolls" from passing vessels—playfully blocking passage until food is offered.

Garyodos operate through emotional-associative thinking. They do not understand language, symbols, or complex orders—but they remember patterns. A ship that feeds them = friend. A flag flown by friendly ships = safety. A cannon that hurt them = threat.

They are not aggressive by nature, but will destroy what has caused pain to themselves or those they have bonded with. Importantly, they **do not attack the people**—only the parts of ships that pose a threat.

Their eye stalks give them a wide range of vision, and they can silently surface with only their eyes visible above water—allowing them to observe ships undetected while assessing behavior.

Garyodos operate through emotional-associative thinking. They do not understand language, symbols, or structured communication, but they are capable of forming complex associations through repeated exposure to environmental patterns. A ship that behaves calmly and provides food is deemed safe. A vessel that causes pain or panic is treated as a threat. Their thinking is more comparable to that of a loyal, protective animal than a reasoning humanoid.

Most recorded Garyodos interactions with surface-dwellers begin with fishing vessels. As crews clean their catches and discard scraps overboard, the scent attracts nearby marine life—including curious Garyodos. At first, they remain submerged, observing silently from the depths. Over time, the consistency of the food source, the lack of aggression, and the routine sounds of fishing operations begin to form a positive association.

Eventually, many Garyodos begin to exhibit protective behavior toward the vessels they’ve bonded with—placing themselves between them and perceived threats. These reactions are not born of malice or loyalty in the human sense, but from a learned connection: if something has hurt the creature before, or seems to be threatening a "safe" ship, it will attempt to stop the source of harm.

They do not attack individuals. Instead, they respond to **actions**—such as cannon fire, magical flashes, or aggressive maneuvers—by disabling the parts of ships responsible. Their intent is not to destroy for destruction’s sake, but to eliminate a repeated source of pain or danger.

Their eye stalks give them exceptional spatial awareness. They can silently surface with only their eyes exposed, allowing them to watch coastal activity and shipping lanes without detection. This makes them excellent ambush predators—but also deeply observant guardians of the territories they claim.

While not truly domesticated, many Garyodos live alongside surface cultures without conflict. Their behavior is shaped entirely by how they are treated. Those shown care—or simply left unharmed—are more likely to return that treatment in kind.

Garyodos are primarily **piscivores**, feeding on massive fish, sea serpents, crustaceans, and deepwater life. However, individuals near populated regions—like Mistwood’s Gary—often enjoy **human-provided food**.

Gary happily accepts fish scraps, roasted meat, vegetables, or stale bread from the docks. While not nutritionally ideal, his size and natural diet keep him healthy regardless. He **does not demand food**, nor is he dependent—if scraps are offered, he snarfles them down. If not, he simply returns to fishing.

In Emberstone, Garyodos are symbols of trust, safety, and earned loyalty. The Mistwood pair—particularly the male known as **Gary**—are embraced as part of everyday life. Children swim with him. Families save scraps to feed him. He is not feared, but cherished.

Emberstone’s flag became Gary’s symbol of comfort, food, and safety. He associates it with good people, good smells, and calm voices.

He is never entitled or demanding—but he will approach. And if welcomed, he will stay a while.

==== Gary of Mistwood Bay ====
"Gary" is the most widely recognized Garyodos due to his peaceful cohabitation with the people of Mistwood. He resides in Mistwood Bay with his mate and is considered a local fixture—equal parts living legend and oversized sea puppy.

He was first observed during a harbor patrol, trailing fishing boats at a distance and surfacing only briefly. Recognizing the opportunity for peaceful contact, Masdrin arranged for a druidic envoy to reach out. Using food offerings and calm, respectful energy, they established initial trust. Gary responded not out of need, but curiosity—finding the people non-threatening and their behavior consistent. He eventually chose to remain in the bay, claiming it as his home.

He shares the bay with a mate, though she is far more reclusive and rarely interacts with the surface. Most locals refer to her simply as Gary’s mate, but some of the children have taken to calling her "Shelly".

Gary is not trained, leashed, or commanded. He is simply present.

He surfaces regularly near public docks, watching dockhands load fish, traders unload goods, and children toss food into the water. His enormous spiral shell, ridged and weathered from years in the sea, serves as both armor and resting place for those brave enough to climb aboard. He often allows people to perch on it for short swims, though he prefers gentle voices and clear water. He does not demand treats, but will gladly accept them—and seems especially fond of table scraps.

He frequently follows large ships as they depart the harbor, gliding beneath them for several miles before returning home. These casual escorts are not planned—they seem to be his way of checking on those he considers part of his extended pod.

While he normally never leaves Mistwood Bay, he has done so once, when asked directly by Masdrin through druidic communion. Presented with the idea that **"Friends in the north are being hurt. Many fishing boats. Friend boats. Help them?"**—Gary understood enough. He left the bay, flanked by the Emberstone Navy, and swam north.

His relationship with the Emberstone flag is born of pattern recognition. He does not understand symbols, but he knows:
- The boats with that flag are calm.
- The people with that flag feed him.
- The ships with that flag have never hurt him.

He has never attacked an Emberstone ship, even when nearby vessels behaved aggressively. Instead, he has intervened—placing himself between hostile forces and the docks or breaking apart weapons mounted on threatening vessels.

- “Wave to the bay or he’ll think you’re mad at him.”

Drawings of Gary appear in children's books, sailor tattoos, and even official signage. No one commands him—but everyone respects him.

==== Bonk of Lake Blackwater ====
Bonk is a large, dark-toned Garyodos who resides in Lake Blackwater—a massive subterranean lake system located between Felynafay and Mistwood. Unlike her oceanic kin, Bonk rules her isolated territory with casual assertiveness. While not aggressive by default, she is known to physically block passage through her waters unless passing vessels offer her something in return—usually food, shiny objects, or fresh-smelling goods.

Bonk is highly territorial and aware of her dominance within the lake. Her behavior suggests a personality that leans toward calculated patience rather than affection. She has been observed tracking vessels silently for extended periods before surfacing to issue a silent “toll demand.”

While no attacks have been recorded, those who ignore her presence often find their ships nudged, slowed, or turned around until they comply. Bonk’s actions seem more about enforcing boundaries than enacting violence.
