Antzar De’Endar
Status: Deceased Race: Drow Affiliation: House De’Endar Position: Second son of Matron Larynda De’Endar Cause of Death: Executed by Masdrin under family judgment
Antzar De’Endar was one of Masdrin’s elder brothers and a former contender for favor within House De’Endar. His legacy is marked by betrayal, having attempted to poison Masdrin at the age of five. He was executed in the throne room by Masdrin himself—an act ordered by their mother, Matron Larynda.
Early Life
Antzar was born into House De’Endar during the rise of Matron Larynda’s regime. As one of her older sons, he was raised under the expectations of noble Drow lineage, trained in martial skill, and bred for cunning. However, his standing would never rival Vielyn’s strength or Masdrin’s favored status.
The Poisoning Attempt
At the age of five, Masdrin was nearly killed by Antzar, who laced a meal with poison in a failed attempt to remove his younger brother. Though the motive is never fully confirmed, Larynda later suggested that Antzar feared what Masdrin would become. Durdrin, however, believed jealousy and fear of lost standing drove him.
The failed attempt set a precedent for Drow justice within the family.
Execution by Masdrin
After the poisoning attempt was revealed, Antzar was seized in the De’Endar throne room. Vielyn restrained him by the throat while Jhule and Maya pinned his arms. Despite this, Antzar broke Masdrin’s ribs with a kick during the initial approach. Masdrin ultimately succeeded on his second attempt, leaping into the air and driving the dagger into Antzar’s chest.
“My first approach earned two broken ribs. The second earned Antzar a dagger in the heart.”
The execution became one of Masdrin’s formative experiences, establishing his strength and loyalty to the family’s brutal code of order.
Antzar’s Dagger
After the execution, Masdrin kept the same dagger under his pillow throughout his youth—a constant reminder of the consequences of betrayal and the cost of survival.
Later in the narrative, Matron Larynda presents Antzar’s dagger back to Masdrin—a subtle threat wrapped in sentiment. It’s a reminder that even favor can be turned to judgment, and that his mother is always watching.
“It was Antzar’s dagger. The same one he used to poison me. The same one I used to kill him. She was reminding me that her favor wasn’t unconditional.”
Reflections and Legacy
- Vielyn recalls Antzar as a “tough son of a bitch,” though not strong enough to beat him. - Durdrin tells the story of Antzar’s death as a warning to others, often using it to highlight Masdrin’s lethality from a young age. - Masdrin himself reflects on the event with mixed emotion—haunted, hardened, and never quite trusting his mother’s motivations.
