Thornweald (Vine System)

Overview

Thornweald is a fast-growing, thorn-bearing vine system developed for defensive barrier use in Emberstone military and estate applications. It serves as a botanical alternative or supplement to barbed wire, providing movement denial, concealment, and controlled environmental fortification.

Unlike invasive species, Thornweald is deliberately engineered to require trace amounts of chelated Aspuenyx within its nutrient profile. Without continued supplementation, the plant weakens and eventually dies off, preventing uncontrolled spread.

Thornweald is not sentient, not magical in behavior, and does not actively entangle targets. Its effectiveness is purely mechanical.

Physical Characteristics

  • Woody shrub base with lateral crawling vines
  • Fibrous stems resistant to snapping
  • Dense lateral growth when properly fed
  • Thorn lengths vary (standard: 2–5 cm)
  • Mature defensive height (frontline profile): 1.2–1.8 meters
  • Roots from node contact when pressed into moist soil

Thornweald does not naturally grow in long, straight rope-like strands unless deliberately trained or processed.

Growth Profiles

Estate Hedge Profile

  • Medium nutrient rate
  • Stable vertical hedge formation
  • Controlled density
  • Suitable for property boundaries

Livestock Barrier Profile

  • Low–medium nutrient rate
  • Lower growth, partial visibility
  • Functional as living fence

Frontline Defensive Profile

  • High nutrient rate
  • Rapid lateral spread
  • Dense crawl and concealment
  • Daily pruning required for firing lanes

Nutrient Dependency

Thornweald requires a proprietary fertilizer blend containing trace chelated Aspuenyx.

Without continued nutrient supply:

  • Growth slows
  • Thorn density decreases
  • Structural integrity weakens
  • Plant eventually dies

This dependency prevents enemy cultivation or uncontrolled ecological spread.

Deployment Methods

Fixed-Line Barrier Installation

  • Irrigation lines installed prior to application
  • Hydroseed-style slurry applied (water, seeds, node trimmings, nutrient mix)
  • 48 hours: nuisance density begins
  • ~7 days: functional barrier under optimal conditions

Daily maintenance includes pruning firing lanes and maintaining irrigation flow.

Nuisance Seeding ("Vine Bombs")

  • Burlap-wrapped nutrient and seed mass
  • Thrown via mechanical launcher
  • Short-term growth (knee height)
  • Used for harassment and disruption
  • Self-terminates as nutrients deplete

Military Function

Thornweald serves to:

  • Deny rapid infantry movement
  • Obstruct low visibility approaches
  • Force breaching teams into exposed positions
  • Slow slave-wave assaults
  • Conceal controlled firing lanes from enemy view

It is not intended as a lethal mechanism but increases exposure time under fire.

Repair Doctrine

After artillery or breaching damage:

  • Immediate machine-gun coverage
  • Reinstallation of irrigation line
  • Slurry patch or node insertion
  • Functional regrowth within 2–7 days

Material Processing

When properly harvested and processed (retted, hammered, and fiber-separated), Thornweald can produce serviceable cordage.

Use of live vines as rope is prohibited under military protocol, as it constitutes unnecessary cruelty due to thorn abrasion and embedded barbs.

Processed fiber is acceptable for:

  • Lashings
  • Utility rope
  • Field repairs

Thorn Utilization

Thicker cured thorns are sometimes used by soldiers to craft defensive collars for morale and trench dogs.

These collars:

  • Feature outward-facing spikes
  • Protect the dog's throat from predators or grappling attackers
  • Do not contact the dog's skin
  • Are not used for discipline or punishment

Climate Considerations

Thornweald performs optimally in temperate and Mediterranean climates.

In sustained freeze conditions:

  • Irrigation systems may freeze
  • Growth slows or becomes dormant
  • Supplementary barriers may be required

Ethical Doctrine

Thornweald is classified as a defensive environmental tool.

It is not to be used for:

  • Prisoner restraint
  • Punitive measures
  • Deliberate torture

Use outside defensive doctrine requires command authorization.

Status

Standard deployment in Emberstone defensive doctrine where climate permits. Supplementary system in cold-weather theaters.
